Okay, so I've created an avatar and I'm half-way done with orientation island. Do I need to finish all of the orientation? I got a little bored with it, and I'd rather just leave orientation and learn by trial/error.
Also, how do I join a group? I found the librarians in second life group, but then I couldn't figure out how to join.
And finally...what should a newby do first, after getting off of orientation island?
I gave a live presentation on SL to a library conference yesterday. The grid was down much of the day, and when I finally got online--15 minutes late--I got the "you have been teleported to a nearby location" message, and found myself in an unknown sim surrounded by French speakers. I quickly teleported to a more familiar spot; this was the first introduction to SL for most of the audience, and I didn't think they were quite ready for nude librarians falling from the sky.
When I first joined SL, I chose the Green Dragon avatar, and was unable to take it off without a huge amount of assistance! Not exactly the image I wanted to portray. :) Since then I have gotten quite a bit better about editing my appearance. Although I must say I am still have a bit of a problem with my new prim hair. :) Thanks for all of the info people have given about ways to become more involved in SL. I agree, having an objective is sometimes the best way to learn. :)
Basically unless you are invited you have to search for the group ... and then join ..
Click on the blue Search button at the bottom of your SL client window, once on the search window click on the Groups Tab. Type "librarians" in the text box .. Click on Search ...hopefully you get a match ...and the group you are looking for is among the ones on the match list ..
