Next Generation Interaction: Are Virtual Worlds Waiting in the Wings?

Event Title:
FastCompany.com Technology Group Call-in

Description:

Next Generation Interaction: Are Virtual Worlds Waiting in the Wings?

Everybody, particularly marketers, are trying to get into the online social interaction game. Linked-In, Facebook and Twitter are the platforms du jour, but there is increasing evidence they may give way to the next emerging social media platform: virtual worlds.

The gamer market has already successfully embedded social interaction into and outside of their games.

And as today’s teens and tweens cut their eye-teeth on 2D worlds such as Club Penguin and Webkinz, expectations are growing for increased acceptance and adoption of some form of virtual worlds that combine gaming and social interaction.

Join FastCompany.com’s Technology Group Coordinator, Donald Schwartz, on October 28th at 4:00 PM EST as he discusses the continuing evolution of virtual worlds and their increasing impact on traditional business models. Schwartz will interview two leading experts on Virtual Worlds who will discuss their evolution and future trajectory.

Our moderator Donald Schwartz looks forward to a lively discussion that brings together leading-edge technology thought leaders and developers with Fast Company’s well-informed, highly-opinionated readers. An established tech writer, Schwartz has been published in New York Enterprise Report, New York Arts Magazine, Brooklyn’s Progress and most recently The Wall Street Journal Online.

Discussing the latest developments in Virtual Worlds will be Tish Shute, founder of UGO Trade - a blog dedicated to promoting the role of open source Virtual Worlds and Web 2.0 in positive global application. Since its inception, UGO Trade has been the go-to place for information on opening up the many different, incompatible virtual world platforms called “walled gardens”.

Tackling the historical perspective is author Bruce Daimer. His book Avatars, is a personal chronicle of virtual worlds’ evolution and has became a handbook for an earlier generation of virtual world developers. CEO and founder of The Digital Space Commons and director of the Contact Consortium, Bruce co-directs a research and development consortium bringing virtual worlds and communities to the net.
